Johan, I'm aslo looking for info on the Oelofse family. My grandfather was Jan Hendrik Oelofse, married to Johanna Jacoba Oberholzer. Their childern were Jan Hendrik Oelofse (my father), Johannes (Hansie) Oelofse, Daniel (Danie) Oelofse, Anna (Annetjie) Louisa Oelofse and Johanna (Joey) Jacoba Oelofse. Unfortunately i don't recall any info with regards to my great grand parents but I'm sure if I spoke to my father he could shed some light. Please email me any info you may have gathered so far. I'm particularly inetersted in where the surname came from(Norway, I believe), its original form (Olafson ?) and the first person in SA with the last name. Of course, being able to follow the lineage from there would be great too.

The following is the beginning of a short history of my father's family of Goosen. I will gladly shared infor about our families. I have information that I will galdly share about the family life in Russia and the Mennonites settlements where they lived. "Beginning about 1790, thousands of Mennonites, largely of Dutch extraction, left Germany for the Central Steppes of Russia.
The Czar had invited Europeans to come and settle this vast plains.
Since the Dutch Mennonites were being persecuted by the prominent Protestant religious followers, the move was not a hard decision to make. Here was a new opportunity to live, farm and be free from religious intolerance. Along with other Ethnic groups, they settled in southern Russia, thinking that this would be a lasting home for them and their future families.

However, in 1871 the Czar’s bureaucrats began a program to make all the Ethnic groups that settled in the Central Steppes become completely Russian. They were to learn the Russian language, be conscripted into the military and integrate into the Russian culture.* When the Ethic groups balked at letting go of their heritage, the Czar’s officials began a different course which was to just throw the foreigners out of Russia or the groups just immigrate on their own. My ancestors on my father’s side of the family, were members of this Dutch Mennonite group.

They, along with a large number of others, left Russia in 1874. They left from Antwerp, Belgium on a ship named S. S. Switzerland and journeyed to North America arriving in New York City on November 13, 1874, traveled to and settled in the state of Kansas. Many other Mennonites had already settled there. Because they were already farmers, and had become familiar with living in a plains region, it was not hard for them to take to the seemingly vast and barren plains of America, which was touted as The Vast Waste Land by earlier American settlers. Because they were hard workers, they developed the plains into successful farms. Soon they had established a large population of Mennonites throughout the Great Plains states. My great grandfather Dietrick, bought 160 acres for about $1600 on Aug 9, 1884, four miles west of Durham, Kansas. Just after the New Year in 1886, a blizzard roared out of the north and lasted for three days. Dietrick became seriously ill during this snowstorm and his wife, Catherina, couldn’t get out to fetch a doctor. He died January 6, 1886.

My grandfather, Abraham was born near Hillsboro, Kansas on September 12, 1878. He was eight years nine months old when his father died and a year later, likewise his mother (she had remarried to a Smith and died in child birth). He and his siblings was raised by his maternal grandparents, Andras (Andrew) and Catherina (Katherina) Pankratz. When he was eighteen, he set out on his own. He had a reaper and thresher outfit, powered only by horses and men and also operated a small grocery store in Alvia, Kansas. In 1903 the Panhandle of OK was opened for homesteading. So Abraham filed for a quarter section and traveled by train to Tyrone, OK the following year. This was as far as the rail line went at that time."

Hi My grandfather was a Goosen and he and my grandmother had 8 children, 5 girls and 3 boys. My father is Kenneth John Goosen and I am his eldest daughter. I know that I have lots of cousins, but when my paremts divirced, I lost touch with almost all of my father's family. My father grew up in the Transkei, near Umtata, on a place calle Nqandule (not sure about the spelling). His one sister married a Benz, the other married a Robinson. I remember some cousins' names; Pieter Goosen, Rina Goosen, Danie Benz. I would like to trace our family tree, as well as connect again with some of my family.

My great grandfather was Peter Goosen, born in 1883 or 1884 in South Dakota, married 11-24-07 to Mary D. Unruh in Turner County, South Dakota, USA. He lived in McCook County, South Dakota, USA. Census records placed Peter and Mary Goosen in Dawson County Montana as early as 1920. I am unable to determine his parents or siblings. The census records state his parents were from Russia and dutch was the language spoken in the home. I know they were also Mennonites. Any links or information would be greatly appreciated. Peter and Mary's son, Walter Eugene Gossen was my grandfather. Yes the Goosen somehow switched to Gossen over the years.

I was just browsing the web about my last name and came about your website. I saw your link on Claus Goosen who is my great, great grandfather. I found most of your information interesting but there were a few errors. Marie Goosen did not die at the age of 43 and her husband's name was Harold Kriesler. They both passed away about four years ago in their late 70's. I just thought I would mention it.

My great great grandfather was named Victor Goossens. He came to the U.S. around 1880. I believe that he had a brother named Hector, Emile, and a sister named Clara. He was married to a lady names Florentine Frere. Victor was born around 1831 in Belguim. Florentine was born Oct 1, 1826 in Jumet Belguim. They originally settled in Hartford, Indiana. Hi, I'v got a message about this site and I'm 58 years old, live en work as sculpturist in The Hague. I was surprised, that so many Goosen's were born in South Africa. I was told that the name "Goosen" came from the land of Gosen, where Abraham lived with is tribe. That land was situated between the rivers Eufraat and Tigris, somewhere in Egypt. Ofcourse I know a lot of family named Goosen. We were born in Hilversum and my grandfather had a chique business there in porcelainen services.

Hallo Goosen's. Jon

Hi. I am looking for information on Mr. James C. Goossen who was born in Holland on 4-4-1859. His parents were James and Sarah Goossen. He came to the U.S. at age 4 and lived in Michigan for a few years and spent the rest of his life in Marion, NY. He married Sarah Goossen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Abram Goossen of Kalamazoo, Michigan. And together, they had 3 daughters: Helen Katherine, Mina Sarah and Delia Lavina. At the time of his death, he left one sister, Mrs. Charles Lays and one brother, Charles Goossen. I am just interested in learning about his life from some friends and family members. Anyone who has any information would be great appreciated. Thanks, Carrie

Wow, great site guys. I just wanted to leave a note to say Hi. I beleive we are one of the only Goosen families in NZ, so its great to see how well loved the name is overseas. It was my father-in-law who brought us the name from South Africa when he was 18. I dont know his lineage other than he came from a long line of JPD Goosens. I'll come back and check one day when I have more info.

Hi! Thanks for a great site. It's really interesting seeing all these Goosens and yet here in Zimbabwe it's not such a common name. My family originate from South Africa and Bechuanaland. My dad' name is Peter Clayton Goosen, my oupa's name is Peter Zacharias Goosen. Peter Zacharias was born at Lobatsi in Bechuanaland Protectorate (now Botswana) on 27th December 1911. His father, Rupert Goosen was a speculator who went to Bechuanaland from South Africa in the early 1900's and his mom's name was Eliza Johanna Goosen. I think her maiden name was Du Rand. They had seven children, Sam, Peter Zacharias, Rupert, Quinton, Frank, Chris, Ben and Anne. Most of these children ended up in either South Africa or Southern Rhodesia. Does anyone know any of them?

Wonderful Page! I wonder if anyone can help me. Looking for anyone with info on: Seine Gosens and Wiechertien Arents Schonewille. They are in my family tree as I am related to their daughter Jantjen. I also MAY be related another way to them by way of a "son" Seine Goossens Seinen, but that is not confirmed. My problem: Seine Gosens Seinen, married to Aukje Alferts Ridder. Family records tell me that Seine Gosens Seinen was the son of Seine Gosens and Wiechertien Arents Schonewille, and that he died 28 AUG 1832. His wife, Aukje Alferts Ridder died 14 AUG 1848. Seine Gosens and Wiechertien Arents Schonewille had 13 children. None of them with the name Seine. None of them married to a Ridder. Seine Gosens Seinen could have been born in 1750. Of their 13 children the only one born in 1750 was Gosen, born 04 OCT 1750; died 13 DEC 1821, and married to Margje Jacobs Kattouw. At the Overlijdensakten Hoogeveen site: http://www.historischekringhoogeveen.nl/aktes/index.htm Here they have a listing for a Seine Gosens born in 1780 and died on 28 AUG 1832. No parents listed. (A match on the death date!!) At the same site they have a Aukien Alferts Ridder born in 1784 and died on 14 AUG 1848. (Another match on the death date.) I was quite pleased when I found this. BUT….. If Seine Gosens Seinen really was born in 1780, that means his mother could not have been Wiechertien Arents Schonewille, as she died 24 JAN 1769. Seine Gosens COULD still be the father as he was 58 years of age in 1750- not impossible. And he did remarry in 1785 to Femmigje Jans Doggen. I am confused? Do I have the birth date of Seine Gosens Seinen wrong? Or the death of his “mother” Wiechertien? And why can’t I find Seine Gosens Seinen listed as one of the 13 children anywhere? Do you have any ideas that could help? Any solutions that I may have overlooked?? Thanks.

I was very much happy and surpriced to have met Retief Goosen last week in Madrid (during the Telefonica Open, which he won). We stayed at the hotel on the same floor. Since we are both an "R.Goosen" the hotel directed messeges ment for Retief to my room! I was happy to have shaking his hand specially since i have just started to take golf classes this summer. The descendants of Marinus GOOSEN in the Norway listing are also descendants of Jacob Pieterse GOOSSEN of Hoek and then Kruiningen, Zeeland, The Netherlands. I took the information from Mia Goosen of Norway, and did a little more research in Salt Lake City and found that her line ties right in with mine - the Jacob GOOSSEN one found here. I would like to know if some of the South African members of this web site can find their forebears in Holland? We probably all connect somewhere back in time.

Hi again Patrick, I'm still tracing various GOOSSEN families mainly from Goes and Kruiningen, Zeeland. I'm pretty sure I can tie the Norway GOOSEN (they dropped an S) into my Zeeland bunch with just a little more research. I've changed e-mail addresses since my earlier messaages. I can now be reached at: shgalitz@yahoo.com or wogalitz@earthlink.net. Keep up the good work!

Patrick, I remember you emailing me 6 or 7 years ago before you had this site. Great work! My brother Bob (Robert Kenneth Goosen) married in 1998, so hopefully the line of Goosens in Texas/Arkansas will continue. You need to add my grandfather to the family tree (he is 84 years old - lives here in Little Rock). His name is John Goosen (by birth Abraham Goosen). He had five children: Kenneth Goosen (my Dad), Clarence Goosen, J.T. (John) Goosen, Karen Goosen (now Karen O'Rear), and Carl Goosen. There are 9 grandkids, three of which were boys. Keep up the good work!

I stumbled across your site and was pleased to find so much information about the Goossen name. How can I learn more about my line? My father is Frederick Goossen born 11/25/1916. My paternal grandfather was Behrend Goossen. My paternal grandmother was Carrie Goossen. Behrend's father was also named Behrend. His mother was Fredricke The senior Behrend emigrated to the U.S. from Grapel, Hanover, Germany in approximately 1860. It is said that the Goossens, along with several other families, founded this small town after emigrating from Holland.

Anna Marie Goossen (Goosen) came to the United States in the womb of her Mother, Teresa Peerlinks Goossen. Her Father was Corneilius Goossen and his Father Ivan Goossen of Belgium. The family settled in Mason County, MI. Corneilus had a sister Julia, and brother Ston that also came to this country. Not all of the siblings immigrated to America. It would be interesting to know if there are any Goossen cousins in Belgium. The name was spelled Goossen by Corneilius and changed to Goosen by his sons in the U. S. Anna Goossen age 86 born in 1913 (year family immigrated to America).
